While there are numerous character traits that can help adults be successful in every aspect of their lives, this article is concerned with three of those traits that every adult who seeks success should master. Hopefully, these traits were instilled as children, but if not, it is not too late to work on developing them now.
Without a doubt, the most important character trait anyone can possess is honesty. Without trust, it is impossible to build successful personal or professional relationships. That's not to say that dishonest people don't have high paying jobs, but making a good living is only one aspect of success.
Besides, most people who are dishonest are eventually found out and risk losing whatever they have accumulated using dishonest means. When others know they can trust you, doors open and these doors can lead to even greater success. Open and honest personal relationships flourish, while those without trust crumble. Of all the character traits that will take you anywhere in life, honesty is by far the most important.
Dependability is another of the character traits that are important for success. Whether the success you seek is of a personal or professional nature, dependability is a must. Being dependable means that you show up when you say you are going to, whether that is to work or when lunching with a friend. It means that others can count on you to keep your word. Some people make promises they can't possibly keep, simply because they don't want to tell others no. However, it is far more important to say no occasionally so that when you do say yes that you can deliver.
Loyalty is another of the character traits that is at the top of the list for most people. When you're loyal, you don't listen to others badmouth your friend, you don't talk about your boss behind her back, and you do stick up for others.
Loyalty is tricky, though and can sometimes be misguided. Sometimes, people are loyal to others for the wrong reasons and when this happens, good people can end up in bad trouble. While it's important to be loyal, it's just as important to be loyal to the right people for the right reasons. You're not doing yourself or others any favors by being loyal to someone that is hurting others. Loyalty sometimes means you don't ------------ (fill in the blank) even when you're tempted.
